Why you should consider Crete as a Wedding Destination

Do you remember a time when …. life was so good, when you didn’t have a care in the world and everyday was a party? You felt like a princess, life couldn’t get any better than this and all those fairy stories promised you would live happily ever after. Your wedding day, a day you had put a lot of work and planning into was finally here. Radiantly walking down the ‘aisle’, your veil was a piece of net curtain and your ‘bouquet’ a few hastily picked daisies. Waiting at the ‘altar’, ‘the man of your dreams’ ( your best friend who had left his Lego to come play with you). While perched precariously on chairs, tables and benches were your guests, your dolls and teddies…. after all you were only five years old!

The Irish and Cretans share many traits including their friendliness, hospitality and love of a good party. Crete, the largest and most diverse of the Greek islands has something for everyone. With its stunning scenery, crystal clear azure waters and endless sunshine it is easy to see why the Crete is believed to have been the birthplace of the’ father of the gods’ Zeus. The island offers a variety of wedding backdrops like the picturesque lakeside in Agios Nikolaos, a beautiful garden location in Elounda or a blessing at a traditional Greek chapel by the sea in Gouves.

When you think of your Wedding Day, what do you see? Do you imagine a picturesque waterside location with colourful fishing boats bobbing in the background on a sparkling lake as you exchange your vows? Or do you imagine a toile covered gazebo within an intimate garden location, a short distance from a beach that provides a stunning backdrop for those all-important wedding photos? Maybe you long for a truly unique experience where you can blend two cultures and have a Greek Blessing at a small traditional chapel beside the sea. With its wide variety of dreamscapes, Crete offers a myriad of possibilities.

As with your ceremony, your reception or celebratory meal can be as chilled or formal as you wish. But whichever you choose, it will be filled with finishing touches that are truly personal to you. With a choice of reception venues located close to all ceremony venues, the only thing you will have to worry about is whether your dress will stretch to accommodate all the delicious food. Sample traditional Greek delicacies, tantalise your taste buds with mouth-watering barbecues and feast your eyes on the wide range of fresh local produce. Venues for your reception can vary from classical styled restaurants to the more unusual ‘floating’ restaurants. From the understated elegance of formal sit-down meals to the laid-back ambience of traditional meze style meals, Crete offers something for every palate and every pocket.

The inevitable variety of guests’ ages, personal preferences or requirements could represent a potential headache. But not in Crete! With its myriad of options, Crete ensures that your guests will be kept occupied during their stay. The more mature guests will be able to submerge themselves in the history and customs of the island. For the beach babes and sun gods there are plenty of beaches and coves for them to explore or just spend sun-drenched days by the pool. The island also boasts a number of water-parks and theme parks for the young. Or why not spend a day with all your guests on a sail boat exploring the azure blue and aquamarine bays? And of course where better to hold a stag adventure day or a hen pamper day then on the island?

Wedding extras
Our wedding packages offer all the vital elements you need for your perfect day. If however, you have special requirements or would love to incorporate more traditional extras, we will be more than happy to organise these for you.  After all, Crete was home to Zorba the Greek and what better way to get your guests up and dancing than with the music and dance that Zorba made famous?  To add to the romantic feel, why not arrive in style in a horse and carriage to your ceremony?  Or for a magical end to your celebrations why not have a spectacular firework display? The possibilities for all those ‘little extra touches’ are endless.

Gouves is a popular Irish resort on the north coast of the island, with views over the majestic, uninhabited island of Dia. The resort is very central offering easy access to famous historic sites on Crete.
Hersonissos is a very popular Irish resort and boasts a very lively nightlife. If the nightlife gets too hectic , then overlooking the resort are a few traditional villages where you can escape to and chill out.
Agios Nikolaos is a bustling, colourful cosmopolitan town which centres around the beautiful Voulismeni lake (believed by many to a be a ‘bottomless’ lake!).
Elounda, once a small fishing village, is now a premier resort boasting a number of deluxe hotels on its outskirts, while still retaining its village feel.
Rethymnon, one of the main towns on the island, west of Heraklion (capital of Crete). Rethymnon’s old Turkish quarter is a must for sight-seers.
Chania is the main town on the West of the island.  It’s ‘old town’ has often been compared to Venice with its beautiful Venetian buildings and narrow streets.

(There are many more places and resorts on the island, the above is just to give you an idea of the variety!)
